Cheap Laughs: The Best in Indie and Alt Comedy This Week

Don't say we never spoil you. This week we have a comedy show entirely based around Saved By the Bell, a deaf stand-up set relayed through ASL, and the comic cream of England's Cambridge University swinging through town with deeply intellectual dick jokes. Combine that with our usual selection of never-fail improvisers, up-and-coming stand-ups, and a variety show run by a drug fiend sex-addict? We call that a pretty funny week.

Cambridge Footlights UCB Chelsea , 8 p.m. $5. Back in the old country ... long before UCB, SNL, or even Second City ... there was the Footlights. Cambridge University's venerable comedy troupe has produced a vast quantity of UK comedy talent: half of Monty Python , Hugh Laurie , Sacha Baron Cohen ... the list is endless. The Footlights are celebrating their 130th anniversary with a transatlantic tour, so catch them in Chelsea while they pass through. They are fresh from a month in Edinburgh, so they should be sharp as tacks.

Bayside Myself The Creek and the Cave , 9:30 p.m. Free. Admit it: you've dreamed about comedians doing live stage readings of popular Saved By The Bell episodes, where each cast member gets a 3 minute Zack Morris style "time out" to talk directly to the audience, and then all perform a fan fiction "bonus scene." Well, dream no more. It's real. The Big Weird Patio Show Canal Bar , 8 p.m. Free. This bijou neighborhood comedy show has got it all: big stuff, weird stuff, patios, planned things, unplanned things, surprises, bits, free popcorn, stand-up comedy, sketch comedy, tiki torches, probably a joke about a cat, and everything in between. Hosted by Ryan Beck and Casey James Salengo .

Tuesday, September 10

The Tony Show UCBeast , 9:30 p.m. $5. New York improv legend Anthony Atamanuik brings dangerous energy to this variety show, like a downed power line sparking across wet tarmac. Guests include MTV Girl Code's Alice Wetterlund , G4TV's Rob Stern and Harold Night stalwart Terry Withers .

Wednesday, September 11

The Brothers Hines UCBeast , 9 p.m. $5. Often, improv can be a gamble. Not with the Brothers Hines. This isn't gambling. This is going to a laugh casino with Rain Man. You win every damn time. Brothers Kevin and Will are two of the funniest people you will ever see make stuff up live on stage, and are well worth 10 hours of your time. Sadly, this evening, they only get one.

Friday, September 13

The Big Gulp Legion Bar, 7 p.m. Free. Rising Comedy Central star Jared Logan, operatic stand-up Matteo Lane, and wise old man Jeffrey Joseph star tonight in this, one of the most consistently superb comedy showcases in Brooklyn.

House Party 5 The Brit Pack Theater, 9.30 p.m. Free. You want free food, free drinks, and free comedy? In New York? On a weekend? Oh, OK. Lucas Kaiser stuffs you with pizza and beer, joined by UCB head honcho Nate Dern, Aaron Glaser and Tim Duffy. Hosts Hoff Matthews and Vine superstar Bill Stiteler organize the chaos.

Wildcats The Creek and the Cave, 8 p.m. Free. So you're enjoying the first five minutes of a comedy show, when all of a sudden the stage is bum-rushed by a gang of leather-bound toughs: the Wildcats. J-Dawg, Sweet Baby J, and Scooter then proceed to take shit over, clown on squares and run riot. If you imagine a stage show that blends Grease, the WWE, and multiple Tony Cliftons, you're not far off. Hosts Eli Sairs, Joel Walkowski and Jeff Wesselschmidt manage the debauchery.

Saturday, September 14

Coyote Average Karma Lounge , 8 p.m. Free. Andrew Fisher is deaf and performs stand-up in ASL with his interpreter voicing for him. It's a comedy experience unlike anything else, not least because of his hardcore fan base in his hearing-impaired community. He'll be joined by Twitter juggernaut and future crazy cat lady Michelle Wolf , Gabe Pacheco and affable host Naomi Ekperigin .
