This week in Cheap Laughs, we have fancy special tapings, a late night TV staff doing improv, nerdy comics, swag comics, a royal baby pig, a tight five on autism, and dick jokes sold with love in the world's most important gay bar. It's a hot week. Here's our rundown of the best in independently produced New York comedy for the next seven days.

Wednesday, June 4th

The Awooga Comedy Hour The PIT, 9.30 p.m. $8.

The swaggery Kevin Barnett is a good-looking MTV poster boy and very talented comic, and you can see him do his stuff this week at Awooga, a fun monthly show that just went weekly. Joining him are the hilarious Sean Crespo, and the cat-like brilliance of Anthony Devito. Stand-up comedy is representing at the improv theaters, baby. Long may it continue.

Train Weck Producers Club, 8 p.m. Free.

Myq Kaplan is a certain kind of person's favorite comedian of all time. The proud owner of a degree in linguistics, Kaplan writes jokes stuffed with word play, weird math, and absurd leaps of logic. If you wear glasses, own a vegan cookbook and consider yourself an indoor kid -- you'll love the guy. And if you don't, you'll probably still like him a whole lot. Joining him on this show are the irrepressible Nick Turner, Liz Miele, and others.

Taping Night: Pepitone and Braunger The Bell House, 8 p.m for Eddie Pepitone ($10) / 10.15 for Matt Braunger (Free).

If you've never been to a stand-up comedy special taping, start with this one. The Bell House hosts two tapings tonight: first with the Bitter Buddha himself, Eddie Pepitone (read our Q&A with him here), and second with Portland (via L.A.) goofball Matt Braunger. If you stay the whole night (for both tapings) you won't only see these two amazing talents, but sets from Colin Quinn, Sean Patton and a host of other great comics.

Thursday, June 5th

Seth Meyers Writers Present: Late Night Snack UCB Chelsea, 9.30 p.m. $5.

Seth Meyers' poached most of his writing talent from the UCB's deep pool of performers and producers. So it's no surprise that his writers room contains some of the funniest improvisers around. And that's what they're doing tonight: hanging out for one night only, and making up a show. In particular, look out for Peter Grosz (yeah, that guy from the Sonic commercials) and 30 Rock's John Lutz.

  Saturday, June 7th

Midnight Stand-Up UCB Chelsea, 8.30 p.m. $5.

Mike Recine had a great set on Conan last month, sailing close to the line on what is usually a very vanilla TV show. Recine subjected Conan's audience to jokes about stealing Mrs. Doubtfire's face and reprimanding autistic children, and they lapped it up. Joining him on this great late-night showcase is SNL's Sasheer Zamata, and John Oliver's blogger-in-chief Josh Gondelman.

Comedy at Stonewall Stonewall Inn, 8.30 p.m. $5.

Only two kinds of people will enjoy this show: gays and straights. The most famous gay bar in the world hosts another of its successful comedy nights this evening. And their lead-in is a foul-mouthed go-go boy dance revue. If you want wild and weird, Stonewall is where you get it tonight. Gay improv sensation Fancy Man will be doing a set, along with Courtney Maginnis, Tim Dillon and more.

Tuesday, May 10th

Gabe & Max's 100 Seconds #10: Tax Advice from Gabe & Max on Vimeo.

King Piglet: Max Silvestri's album release show Littlefield, Doors 7 p.m / show 8 p.m. $12 here.

As co-host of the longest-running, and perhaps best respected comedy night in Williamsburg (Big Terrific), Max Silvestri is a mainstay of the Brooklyn comedy world. Tonight he regales Littlefield with his views on food (there are a lot of views) as he launches his first standup comedy album King Piglet. As a food columnist for the Onion AV Club and Top Chef recapper for, we really cannot stress enough how much food-related material Max has mastered. So if you like eating way too much then laughing at yourself, this is the show for you.

Tom Cowell is a comedian. Follow him on Twitter @mrtomcowell. Email with all listing suggestions.
