CVS Bangers 3 Will Again Make You Ask, 'Damn Son, Where'd You Find This?'
You may have never known it, but the only thing Elton John's "Sad Songs Say So Much" was missing all these years was a few gunshots, an air horn, and a guy with a deep voice demanding "MORE FIRE!" Put those things together and you've got magic, friend. CVS Bangers Volume 3 magic. The kind that mashes up the songs you'd typically hear while making your trip to the pharmacy with rap mixtape tropes. Gangsta Grillz meets Yacht Rock, basically. It's brilliant and hysterical, and brilliantly hysterical. This most beautiful marriage is the brainchild of DJ Hennessy Youngman, who hosts a CVS Bangers 3 listening party tonight at Beverly's, and described the project thus when he debuted the first CVS Bangers last year:
CVS BANGERS IS THE AUDIOSCAPE FOR WHEN YOU'RE BUYING TAMPONS OR A 12 PACK OF CONDOMS, A SAMPLING OF THOSE MAGIC TUNES THAT PLAY WHEN YOU'RE CONTEMPLATING HOW RIDICULOUS YOU WOULD LOOK CARRYING 24 ROLLS OF TOILET PAPER ON THE TRAIN, THOSE BITTERSWEET TUNES OF YESTERYEAR THAT SKIP THROUGH YOUR MIND AS YOU READ THE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE BACK OF A BOX OF FROZEN PIZZA AND OPT FOR A PINT OF ICE CREAM INSTEAD, THOSE SPECIAL DITTIES THAT ACCOMPANY YOUR SMASHING THE BAR CODE OF A CAN OF RED BULL AGAINST THE SCANNER OF BROKEN SELF-CHECKOUT MACHINE. CVS BANGERS IS COMMERCE ITSELF, AND COMMERCE, MY FACELESS INTERNET FRIENDS, IS BEAUTIFUL.
Youngman is the alter ego of Jayson Musson, a Bronx-born, Brooklyn-living artist who used to be in Philly rap supergroup Plastic Little. He's also the guy whose voice you hear on "Harlem Shake" (saying "Do the Harlem Shake!"), the meme-turned-hit that charted a number one hit for Mad Decent's Baauer. As Hennessy, Musson took to YouTube for an appropriately titled and thoroughly entertaining Web series called "ART THOUGHTZ," a subject he knows quite a bit about -- his résumé boasts an MFA in painting from The University of Pennsylvania and an undergrad degree from the University of the Arts in Philly. Bangerz is his latest in a long string of high/low concept work for public consumption. Though tonight's party is competing with Riff Raff at Webster Hall and the World Series, it should be special. In the words of Musson:
BANGERS 3 Listening Party tonight at 9pm at Beverly's. I will be playing some songs afterward off of my computer device in the laziest manner possible so I can get drunk enough to forget my last name. ✌️ Bring drugs. Stay in school.
