D'Angelo to Headline the Apollo Theater for First Black Messiah Performance
D'Angelo on this week's cover
D'Angelo first appeared on the Apollo stage at age sixteen in 1991, performing under the group name Michael Archer and Precise, winning its Amateur Night three nights in a row. He used the cash prize to buy equipment, which he used to write songs that would eventually appear on his debut album, 1995's Brown Sugar.
He later returned to the Apollo as a guest artist on Showtime at the Apollo.
