For their blistering, spiraling second album psych/prog/metal titans Titan have adopted a strategy guitarist Josh Anzano tersely describes as, "less weed, more speed." This means abandoning the gorgeous and sprawling nu-kraut pulse of 2007's A Raining Sun of Light and Love For You and You and You in favor of an equally gorgeous and sprawling burn 'n' wheedle that points to everything from the noir noodle of Italo-proggers Goblin to the mountain-howling riffs of Iron Maiden. For the five-song suite Sweet Dreams (due Oct 12), the band made the leap from lowercase-m metal label Teepee to capital-m Metal label Relapse, and the transition is immediately obvious, a spacey blur of fleet-fingered soloing and propulsive push, most often in 8-minute chunks. The appropriately epic "Wooded Altar Beyond The Wander" has the jovial gallop of another band that leapt from TeePee to Relapse, High On Fire, but with twice as many notes, space-soarin' astro-boogie, and proggy keys beamed straight off of Kansas's Leftoverture.

Titan, "Wooded Altar Beyond The Wander"

Q&A: Titan guitarist Josh Anzano

What is "Wooded Altar Beyond The Wander" about?

Upcoming Events

Basically the harmonic resonance of the natural world. And the idea that much of our species' conscious and spiritual energy is very much out of sync with it.

What inspired it lyrically?

Thinking about tripped out shit, probably.

And musically?

Jamming all loud.

What goes through your mind when you play a sprawling guitar solo like this? Are there visuals?

I think about super sick shit. If I described the visuals you probably wouldn't even believe me.

What's the most memorable show you've played in New York?

None of them. Ask us about the West Coast, where it rules.

What's your favorite place to eat in Brooklyn?

Good question. We're pretty much fat kids on the inside and occasionally on the outside. But Kris and Dave overload on Pies N' Thighs before almost every single practice. Which is about one or two times a week. no joke. But for me personally, I find myself at either Diner, Mexico 2000, or Sel De Mer on a semi regular basis. Those three spots combined probably have everything I'd ever want at any given time. I'm glad you didn't ask about the borough of Queens because I don't need to be advertising about having to stick my finger down my throat for a healthy purge just to cover the most ground in the shortest amount of time.

Are you an emerging local band who has an upcoming 7", MP3, or album? Are you not totally fucking terrible like 90% of the bands in this city? Then please send us an email at yesinmybackyard@gmail.com. Links and YSIs only. No attachments please!
