Exclusive Premiere: Watch YAWN Perform 'Overflow' on a Brooklyn Rooftop

Just in time for summer, psych-tinged Chicago four-piece YAWN remind us to be extra grateful for the warm weather. Their new video, for "Overflow," sees the band playing on a Brooklyn rooftop at last year's CMJ, a show the cops shut down shortly after shooting wrapped. Also included: coats, scarves, hats, gloves, and all manner of clothes we're so glad to have left behind for the next few months.

Simple, dark shots add to the chilly effect, and the intimacy of the rooftop — a fan holds up stand-less mics for the band to sing into — is exactly the sort of sweet imagery befitting summer music played in winter. A blissfully poppy guitar riff anchors soft vocals until the shredding solo kicks things into solid psych-rock territory. This is Phoenix via Surfer Blood, with the little bit of weirdness that marks YAWN's signature sound.

"Overflow" is also a noticeable progression from the band's most recent, sophomore album, last year's Love Chills. Where tracks on that record occasionally bordered on the kooky (although pleasingly, to be sure), here they've slimmed down to their most effective parts: solid guitar work that alternates between glossy and fuzzy, a light-handed percussion style that supports without distracting, and airy team-effort lyrics that float above the winsome noise.

You can check out the video for "Overflow" below and catch YAWN at two upcoming Brooklyn dates.

YAWN play Shea Stadium BK with Shark? and Sleeping Bag on June 6, and Union Pool on June 14 as part of the Northside Festival. They're set to release a new EP, Day Trip, on August 21.
