News Roundup: The Sonic Youth Gossip Girl Single, Clipse Manager Pleads Guilty, Arthur Russell at NYU
--That Sonic Youth Gossip Girl cameo is approaching, and since SY evidently take this responsibility very seriously, they're releasing a single of their performance on the show--an acoustic version of EVOL's "Star Power" is the word--on Tuesday, October 13, the day after the show airs. It will be available through iTunes with The Eternal's "Antenna" as a B-side, or through Sonic Youth's own site, where options include "a limited edition hand printed and numbered 'Star Power' poster" (that's it there on the left) and a shirt of the same design.
--A former manager for the Clipse has pleaded guilty to running a ten-million dollar drug ring. According to AllHipHop, Anthony "Geezy" Gonzalez pleaded to "conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, crack, heroin and marijuana and using, carrying and possessing firearms during and in relation to and in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime." At issue is a half-ton of cocaine and over a ton of marijuana--try to imagine a half-ton of cocaine. The Clipse escaped without charges, although they've hardly disowned Gonzalez. "Every time I talk to him he's sounding good," Pusha T told HHW.
--The Arthur Russell conference at NYU we wrote about earlier takes place this weekend. Tim Lawrence, author of Hold on To Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, does the keynote at on Saturday at 10 a.m.; talks by Simon Reynolds, longtime Russell collaborators Peter Zummo and Ernie Brooks, a screening of Matt Wolf's stellar doc Wild Combination, and a number of evening musical performances are set to follow.
