Recommended: George R. Stewart's Names on the Land at Book Court

Readings from George R. Stewart's Names on the Land: A Historical Account of Place-Naming in the United States Tuesday, September 2, 7 p.m. Book Court 163 Court Street, Brooklyn, 718-875-3677

George R. Stewart's Names on the Land, a '40s–era compendium of outlandish American geography (think Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico) was re-released this July by NYRB Classics. First reviewed in the Times by Eudora Welty, Stewart's investigations into stranger-than-strange American place-names continue to entrance hot-stuff writers, including novelist Colson Whitehead, who will read from Names on the Land tonight at Book Court, along with Paris Review editor Matt Weiland (who penned the book's introduction), American historian Mike Wallace, and writer Tom Vanderbilt. NYRB Classics editor Edwin Frank will emcee; Hot Coffee, Mississippi, and Climax, Georgia, will almost certainly be mentioned. —Ruth McCann
