Soul-Country Bros Let Their Burritos Fly

The Southwestern Americana formalism here is slightly wet to the touch, like a glass of beer sweating at your table while you chat up a woman who just stepped in out of the rain. Although Chris Gaffney and Dave Gonzalez got the Hacienda Brothers together in Tucson, these days they make their home in Southern California, so their take on the Intruders' "Cowboys to Girls" continues in the soul-country tradition of the Flying Burrito Brothers, but with zero irony. With Dan Penn's production covering up the duo's vocal shortcomings, What's Wrong With Right succeeds as a series of canny performances that offer small pleasures, like the accordion on a cover of Penn and Spooner Oldham's "Cry Like a Baby." And when they sing, "You've gone cool to my touch/Am I asking too much," the Brothers prove they're cool enough to generate a little heat.
