This Weekend! Sleigh Bells, Broken Social Scene, Death Set, Ava Luna, Beauty Feast, Dinosaur Feathers, Jonsi w/ Nico Muhly, And Much Much More
Unless you regard yourself as a ticket-scalping monger, you must accept that a Friday roundup begins with four sadly inaccessible sold-out shows: Caribou, Sleigh Bells, Local Natives, and Broken Social Scene. Fortunately, this gives you the opportunity to revel in some well-earned "I'm on a Boat" merrymaking with All Leather (a Steve Aoki-bruising electro-freakout act) and the Death Set (a gang of frantic, blippity punk rocker) on a Rocks Off Concert Cruise. Meanwhile, Starscream pay tribute to their Decepticon namesake with scrambled 8-bit instrumentals at Glasslands, and scuzzy surf-poppers Coasting fuzz out at the Bell House. To close up the night, Shea Stadium is hosting Yes in My Backyard-approved Ava Luna (a "post-TVOTR, Dirty Projectors-inflected bedroom soul project") and Beauty Feast, the nine-strong folk lovefest led by a young lady named Anna "Clown Bitch" Meyer.
Start your Saturday at Fort Useless with Dinosaur Feathers, whose combination of "choral splendor with snappy drum machines" was featured in the Voice last November. At Le Poisson Rouge, actor Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale, Zombieland) joins woodsy folksman David Bazan for a live music/comedy variety show called "Radio Happy Hour." In addition to performing, Bazan is planning to "leave sexy voicemails for strangers." Elsewhere, Talibam! blast their shitgaze jazz at Death By Audio with distortion-defecating lo-fiers PC Worship.
On Sunday, finally quell your Jonsi urges at Terminal 5, where you'll find the Sigur Ros frontman trumpeting glittery Icelandic pop with indie-rock's town bicycle for orchestral grandeur, Nico Muhly. Or there's Brooklyn Bowl's "Rock & Bowl," a free bowling competition paired with a revolving round of DJ's, the dub-happy femme rapper Malene Younglao, and some obligatory "fashion swag" prizes.
