Week in Review: Listen to Them Goddamn Drums

Week in Review: Listen to Them Goddamn Drums

In the week SOTC blood kin Christopher R. Weingarten swore up an absolute storm in defense of music criticism, we memorialized his cascades of profanity in a very special video edit, then rode out on the battlefield once more to sort out the critical scrum that broke out in the speech's wake. We still love you Chris!

R.I.P. Gang Starr's Guru, a rapper who will remain in our top ten for the rest of recorded time. Hold your head Premier. Thanks for the tribute, Mister Cee. And as for you, Solar--karma is a motherfucker.

Juan Maclean talked to us about his new DJ Kicks contribution. Cultural guru Karl Hangstrom Miller warned us of the perils of record collecting. the morning benders told us about why you'll never see their "Excuses" video reenacted. The Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez Lopez took us behind the scenes of the making of his new film, The Sentimental Engine Slayer. And we met two of the most wonderful new additions to the New York music landscape, Golden Triangle and I Dazzler.

Sad to say, this video of a drunk guy at Coachella struggling mightily to put on his flip-flops is pretty much the perfect epitaph for our generation.

Kelis mixed bossy and bass-y at Santos' Party House. Snoop Dogg played your favorite song at Brooklyn Bowl. And the Hold Steady returned to New York and the Bowery Ballroom.

Plus the death of the All Points West Festival, the possible resurrection of the Market Hotel, a postmortem analysis of Record Store Day sales, American Idol, M.I.A.'s upstaging of Jay-Z at Coachella and subsequent banger of a single, Sly Stone's act of (self-) obliterating rebellion at that same festival, Rihanna covering "Wonderwall," a lamentable Crystal Castles-related pun, and an even more lamentable farewell to You Say Party! We Say Die! drummer Devon Clifford. Looking for something to do this weekend? Check out our guide. We're back on Monday.
