Week in Review: Taking Our Talents To South Beach

Week in Review: Taking Our Talents To South Beach
Sam Horine

In the week we put the worst band name in New York to a vote (Phil and the Osophers, you are no match for Freelance Whales), we watched as LeBron James put his own name in as the most hated in New York, while Kanye West stood proudly at his side. The last place West was seen before that? Having an imaginary conversation in Times Square with the Gilded Coffin of Tjuya.

Diddy held forth on Biggie, Mary (the biblical one), and his own ambition at 92Y Tribeca. Delorean took up residence at the Stuy Town Oval. Total Slacker, Ava Luna, and Beach Fossils side project Red Romans turned on the air conditioning at Union Pool. The Rub celebrated their eighth anniversary at Southpaw. The Hood Internet unleashed a torrent of guilty pleasures at the Bell House. And Faith No More invaded Williamsburg, again. Want to know how one Williamsburg bar welcomed all those aging fans? Hint: it involved the word "nerds."

Beach Fossils bassist John Pena chucked his bass in the East River; controversy ensued. Then we asked him about it.

Liz Phair returned with with the internet-only Funstyle; we promptly reviewed it. Ozomatli, who are performing at Celebrate Brooklyn tonight, talked to us about boycotting Arizona. Knight School offered their gleefully no-fi summer jam "I'm Your Band" for download. So, for that matter, did Father Figures: get "Patty's Cats" here.

Plus the unlikely Kickstarter success story of Brooklyn's Shark?, New York's newfound Drake ban, a new Sleigh Bells workout video, Dave Tompkins salutes Rammellzee, The-Dream bricks, and Big Boi does Jay Leno.

Trying to figure out your weekend? Use our Twitter guide to surviving Lady Gaga's final sold-out show at Madison Square Garden tonight, a helpful primer to the annoying questions your indecisive friends will ask about the first Jelly NYC Pool Party on Sunday, and our trademark I Don't Go Clubbing, I Go Dancing nightlife cheat sheet, starring Que Bajo, Joakim, Reggaeholics, DJ Shark, and DJ Maseo. We're back on Monday.
