Week In Review: The Love and the Wizardry
We are all Jay-Z's children,. Photo by Jori Klein.
In the week we told you why you can't hate Kanye West and love My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy at the same time, we made similarly bold claims about Girl Talk--ten worst moments on that record, right here--and the Beatles, who along with a catalog that is liable to burn up the iTunes charts for the next couple weeks, brought with them a few songs guaranteed to not top any charts. All in a day's work, ya'll.
Good news on the local nightlife horizon, for once: the Greenpoint venue Coco66 reopens tonight, Santos Party House will be back to hosting dance music in a couple more weeks, and we even got a new venue entirely, District 36, which has its grand opening tomorrow night.
We were lucky enough to snag a moment with Patti Smith, 2010 National Book Award Winner, not to mention Glenn Branca, who recounted all his various symphonies for us, one by one. We also got to watch Jay-Z talk about his new Decoded with Cornel West at the New York Public Library (and about wizards at the Box, a few days earlier), while Sufjan Stevens threw a two-hour party at the Beacon Theatre, Tame Impala inspired one-man dance parties at the Bowery Ballroom, Anamanaguchi led a Four Loko-fueled protest in Union Square, the Joy Formidable soothed alt-rock die-hards at the Bowery Ballroom, Kings of Leon played "Use Somebody" at Madison Square Garden, Monarch led a violent ladies' night spectacular at the Cake Shop, and Nas, Cee Lo, Pete Rock, and Diplo shared an open bar beneath the Manhattan Bridge at Heineken's behest.
Plus new music from Primitive Weapons and Wires Under Tension, Nicki Minaj's wild week, fun with the #beatlesasMP3s hashtag, news on the 2010 Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, the ongoing ballad of Kim Kardashian and The-Dream, and more, somewhere below. We're back on Monday.
