The Music Masters Camp Series is proud to add The Women's Music Summit to its current highly attended musician programs (www.musicmasterscamp.com) at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY. This 2-day experience offers players of all instruments and levels the chance to enjoy the natural splendor of the Catskills, while coming together to learn, practice, perform and connect through various workshops, panels and more focusing on female musicians.
Highly respected artist/musicians such as Kaki King, Meshell Ndegeocello, Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole/Smashing Pumpkins), Marnie Stern, Malina Moye and Bibi McGill (Beyonce/Pink) will teach master classes and ensemble workshops, as well as participate in group discussions, seminars, Q&A and jam sessions. More special guests are expected to be added to the roster, along with music industry professionals to contribute to various aspects of the business.
MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO: World renowned singer/songwriter/bass player and first female artist signed to Madonna's Maverick label, Meshell has been both celebrated and berated for her politically charged lyrics, sexual boundary crossing, her ruminations on race, love, sex, betrayal, God, power, and for choosing the road less traveled--a winding adventure through her personal musical path, rather than the industry formulas. Throughout her career, Meshell has continued to follow her own muse and record music her way, releasing albums inspired by her native go-go, hip hop, rock, R&B, punk as well as a full-on jazz album. She has played with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morissette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Billy Preston, Chaka Khan, among others. "I am looking forward to exchanging ideas with students and musicians alike this summer. I often shy away from teaching but this environment feels special and open. I am looking forward to hearing and playing and experiencing the sounds that will come from all these musical women."
MARNIE STERN: Marnie is a songwriter/guitarist best known for her technical skill and playing style and has released three albums to date. She has been hailed as "...a virtuosic guitar player who flavors the finger-tapping technique associated with male players like Eddie Van Halen," in the New Yorker, while Pitchfork noted of her latest self-titled album, "Her complex arrangements evoke emotional turmoil as the songs ping-pong between excitement and panic, ecstasy and despair, extraordinary confidence and harrowing self-doubt. It's intense stuff...Still, Stern's songs invite a strong bond with the listener-- for all its charged-up rock power, this is intimate music. It's like jumping headfirst into someone's psyche." "I am so thrilled to have a chance to be a part of this camp while being surrounded by these terrific talents." MALINA MOYE: Acclaimed singer/songwriter/lefty guitarist Malina has carved her own lane successfully between both rock and soul music, with Guitar World noting: "With an upside-down, left-handed style that can't help but evoke Jimi Hendrix, Malina Moye straddles both rock and soul." Her inspiring resume includes being the first African-American woman to play the National Anthem on electric guitar at a major league sporting event, performing at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as headlining a tribute with Chaka Khan, honoring Stevie Wonder, for which Jet magazine raved Moye's performance as "one of the highlights of the evening." "I'm very excited to be a part of the first women's summit. The caliber of artist participating this year is outstanding. I think we all will learn a lot from each other whether it's through experiences, playing techniques, or sharing business ideas. It's going to be funktabulous!!"
BIBI MCGILL: A multi-talented guitarist for the likes of Pink and Beyonce, Bibi is also a certified yoga instructor and has been christened "the Diva of Organic Rock" in her cover story in OM Magazine. She is a specialist in guitar, auditioning techniques, health, nutrition, yoga and is very passionate about raw foods and living a balanced life--especially when faced with the rigors of the road. "I'm super excited for the opportunity to share my wisdom, knowledge and experience with our future generation of women musicians around the globe. The music industry has been out of balance for so many years when it comes to male and female alchemy. This is our time and we're gonna Run the Mutha!!!!!!"
KAKI KING: Kaki is renowned for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies, energetic live shows, use of multiple tunings on acoustic and lap steel guitar ]and her diverse range in different genres in her decade long career. In 2006, she was the sole female and youngest of the bunch on a Rolling Stone list of "New Guitar Gods" and also scored the soundtrack alongside Eddie Vedder and Michael Brook for Sean Penn's celebrated "Into the Wild," for which she received a Best Original Score Golden Globe nomination. Kaki has also released numerous albums and EPs, most recently Junior, of which USA Today called her songs "bracing and fascinating." "I'm looking forward to teaching a master class about alternate tunings and extended techniques on the acoustic guitar in this amazing setting!"
MELISSA AUF DER MAUR: Celebrated musician and photographer, Melissa has played bass for Smashing Pumpkins and Hole, as well as releasing her own solo work and recording with various artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Ric Ocasek and Fountains of Wayne, among others. In 2010 she released Out Of Our Minds, which includes a CD, comic book and the OOOM fantasy feature directed by Tony Stone. MAdM is currently focusing on her efforts as creative director of the Basilica Hudson, an arts and performance space in Hudson, NY. "This is certainly a one of a kind experience for any music loving women out there. I look forward to sharing it with any of you who can make it."
