The Elements Festival returns to New York on August 22 for its third time 'round the dance floor. Headlining the all-day affair are two of EDM's more illuminating acts, house music extraordinaire XXYYXX and dance/bass technician Paper Diamond. In keeping true to the scene's tendency to bank on surprise (and attempt to avoid shutdowns), the exact location remains a secret — Brooklyn's waterfront has been dropped as a hint — though the official venue will be revealed later this month. The first Elements Festival commandeered an old grain elevator complex in Red Hook in 2013, proving this event is more than capable of booking intriguing sites at which to express yourself in dance.
The organization behind Elements is the young but accomplished production company BangOn!, which recently provided a stage at the massive upstate festival Mysteryland this past May. BangOn! has already established itself, during its brief five-year existence, as a leading contributor to the NYC underground with colorful and bizarrely themed nightlife events. The 2012/2013 New Year's Eve celebration packed a Williamsburg warehouse and featured flying burlesque performers and carnival rides.
BangOn! is approaching this year’s Elements with an eco-friendly consciousness and has set up appropriate measures to ensure Mother Nature’s safety (in addition to that of fest patrons, of course) during this large crowd-drawing occasion. The recharge stations for cellphones will be solar-powered, as will the various art installations that require energy, and food vendors will be stocked with biodegradable cups. On top of that, owners of either hybrid or electric-powered vehicles will be eligible for a 33 percent discount on their tickets.
Elements will host three stages this year; Paper Diamond is set to dominate the World Stage in the mid-evening. This L.A.-via-Colorado DJ is known as Alexander Botwin when he's off duty, but onstage he’s a supplier of throbbing house with occasional hip-hop vocals (as heard in his two-week-fresh collaboration with Protohype, “Let’s Go”).
Manning the Air Stage is the luminescent XXYYXX. Hailing from Orlando, Marcel Everett is the brains behind this operation, and satisfies through manipulated keyboard samples and underlying bass drones. Check the mix “Good Enough,” off his eponymous 2012 sophomore studio album, and enjoy the rich TLC “No Scrubs” sampling.
The third and final stage is aptly titled the Water Stage (we’re working with the Elements here, people!), and Eduardo Castillo will headline this deep-house-focused grandstand.
The Elements Festival takes place August 22 from 1 to 10 p.m. and is an 18+ event. A secret Brooklyn waterfront location will be announced later this month; for more information, check their site, here.
