Get Awkward

at Mercury Lounge

Be Your Own Pet’s upcoming album is called Get Awkward, and although we wouldn’t say these fierce Nashville whippersnappers, led by the fiery Jemina Pearl, have the most refined social graces, their spastic, buzzsaw garage-rock is quite self-assured. Awkward, due out next month, is their second album on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! label, and features the same head-spinning exuberance as their self-named debut, with a trip to the movies thrown in as well. Word is that thrashy surf number “The Kelly Affair

” (currently streaming on their MySpace page), was inspired by Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

, and the charmingly titled, anti-groupie track “Bitches Leave

” takes its name from a line in Robocop

. BYOP begin a tour with the Raveonettes for the month, but you can catch them on their own tonight for an undoubtedly fuuuuuun time.
