Former Scientologist Actor Wants His Confessional Files Back
Jason Beghe accuses church of secretly taping Tom Cruise; writes a letter that Scientology won’t deliver
by Tony Ortega
April 29th, 2008 7:00 AM

Two weeks ago, in a YouTube video and an interview in the Voice, Jason Beghe denounced Scientology as a “rip-off” that “brainwashed” its members. A veteran actor of films and TV, Beghe recently left Scientology after 12 years in the controversial church, during which he estimates he spent a million dollars on classes and training in Scientology’s arcane practices.

Beghe went public with his newest offensive against the church last night by posting online a letter addressed to Scientology leader David Miscavige. In the letter, Beghe demands that Miscavige return his confidential confessional files—dossiers compiled during his therapy, which, Beghe says, are also kept on Tom Cruise and other celebrity Scientologists.

“I want my folders back. There’s no reason for Scientology to maintain them. I paid a million dollars for that shit,” Beghe tells the Voice.

Followers of L. Ron Hubbard believe that they can develop superhuman abilities through a process called “auditing,” which includes discussing past disappointments and bad behavior while holding the sensors of an “e-meter,” a machine that measures electric current in the skin. What a parishioner admits to during auditing then becomes material that is recorded in folders as they progress through Scientology’s many levels, including beginners who are “pre-clear” or “pc,” and more advanced believers who seek to become “operating thetans” or “OT.” Such sessions cost Beghe as much as $1,000 an hour.

In the letter, Beghe demands his “pc, pre-OT and ethics folders” as well as any videotapes of his years of therapy. Beghe says that he’s not concerned about the material that was recorded in his files or what Scientology might do with them, but in part he wants to make a point about the church continuing to hold onto privileged information.

“More people have left Scientology than are currently in it. And yet they maintain these files about what people have said to them in private sessions. Why would you want these people to hold onto this stuff?” says Beghe, who appeared in films such as Monkey Shines, G.I. Jane, and Thelma & Louise and TV shows such as Melrose Place, Picket Fences, and Everwood. “I can tell you with certainty that I’m never going back into Scientology. So I’ll never need their help again.”

He adds that he specifically referred to video recordings in his letter because he believes that celebrities are widely taped without their knowledge in what are supposed to be private, confessional therapy sessions. And he says he has reason to believe that famous Scientologist Tom Cruise, in particular, was taped without his knowledge.

About three years ago, Beghe says, he went through a special series of sessions in Scientology’s “Celebrity Centre” in Los Angeles with Marty Rathbun, who was formerly one of the top officials in the church.

“Marty was in town because he was auditing Tom Cruise. They had set up in a special room at CC.” Beghe says he was told that Cruise had requested that nothing be taped. “However, a friend of mine claims to have designed the system that was used to put a hidden camera in an overhead light in the room, so it was recorded. And I know, because the only people who used that room—I would go in, then Tom would go in, then I would go in. It was just the two of us.”

Because of such tactics by the church, Beghe says, he wants them to release what material they have.

“It’s like writing a diary. Wouldn’t you want that? I just want my shit. Maybe it would be interesting for me to look at. I don’t understand what their claim to it is.” Continue

This no account actor simply wants free pub for doing an expose on this cult of con artists and nutjobs. Scientology sounds like an Amwayesque pryamid scam for the mind. The guy says it took him three years to grow disullusioned, which is indicative of the clueless moron he is. He was an asshole to get involved with a bunch like this. Like Jack said "Go sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here"

One more comment for the history books. My second wife, now ex, Janet Finley Parker Beatty, was caretaker of the Office of Special Affairs International (the PR, legal, flap handling bureaucracy of the Scientology movement), working on the upper floors of the Scientology management building in Los Angeles, 6331 Hollywood Blvd, 90027, where she handled the requests for info from the "secret" investigationa and information files that official Scienotlogy keeps. In those files are the worst discreditable acts culled from parishioners spiritual counseling files. In otherwords Jason Beghe's and every notable Scientologists' no longer confidential information finds its way into the OSA Int "Invest Files." My ex wife was the "Invest Files In Charge." She handled the requests that senior church members were allowed to make to the "Invest Files" to find out if a particular Scientologist was "cleared" to go to the Freewinds vessel, for instance, where top level parishioners of the Scientology movement go for the OT 8 spiritual level (top of the Bridge to Total Freedom that Hubbard/Scientology offers). A person wishing to go do OT 8 spiritual level had to be cleared first. My ex wife pulled a partishioners OSA Int file, and provided the info on whether a parishioner had been doing anything naughty that would make them inelligible to participate on the OT 8 level, which only the most privileged and ethical Scientologists are allowed to do! So, besides the damn counseling files, there in Hollywood, on the upper floors of the Scientology management building, at 6331 Hollywood Blvd, are also the "Invest Files" that the OSA Int bureaucrats keep on their parishioners, the summarized "dirt" and uptodate reports on any unethical behavior of their members! The movement is far far more authoritarian than the general public knows, and AGAIN, I see NO scholars and academics taking the movement to task in detail, at this time. We need more scholarly and academic taking to task of the public domain writings of Hubbard, which is ample evidence of the 1984ish and flashgordanesque nature of the Scientology movement. I worked in the lifetime religious order that manages and runs Scientology, the Sea Org, from 1975-2003. They won't tell you in detail why they won't give you the folders back, but the folders also contain people's stories of other people, for instance the folders of one person have the remembrances of many other people's mis-doings, etc, since Scientology does a LOT of hunting for transgressions, and in their sweeping up of transgressions of one person, they write about the transgressions of other people mentioned. So, in fact, the Scientology claim is that if they give up one person's folders, then the information on other people is thus potentially leaked out! This is an important issue, and needs a scholarly/legal paper that really discusses all aspects of it. In general, I believe the church of Scientology's stance is they will destroy a person's folders, and let the person witness the destruction. But due to what they consider their honorable (questionable of course) position of wishing to keep whatever is in a particular person's folders OUT of the reach of anyone who could let the information be public, that is why they in my opinion will NOT be giving Jason nor any parishioner their folders back. I think this gets slightly technical, in the cases of ex Scientologists who still want to do Scientology auditing to one another outside of official Scientology, and those people want their files so they can do the reform or freezone Scientology auditing, and in that case, I believe also, the official Scientology position is that the church will only destroy a person's folders and let the person witness the destruction. I think some scholar ought to do a paper on this subject alone, and reseach all angles of it. Chuck Beatty, ex Scientology staffer, '75-'03, 412-260-1170 Pittsburgh, PA. Tony Ortega's done excellent coverage for years of Scientology! Excellent work.

@Freddy "So Tony, you write what ever comes to mind and then your readers blindly believe it to be true?"

Freddy is an OSA troll who does not even bother to change his name from the last time he trolled an Ortega thread. Hey Freddy, if you think that Tony is a liar, as you say, why not personally ask Jason Beghe whether he asked the COS for his files back? Is it because you are a coward and know that he would rip you a knew one? How come you OSA trolls never confront or argue? Is it becaue you know you would fail?

It is a mark of a true altruistic journalist to help a fellow human being correct the abuses against him by agreeing to spread this story for Mr. Beghe. It is my sincerest hope that Jason Beghe gets the closure he deserves. Thank you Tony Ortega for helping both Mr. Beghe directly and many many others who have been harmed by this cult, however indirect that help is.

Actually Freddy, what Tony wrote is the truth. More HAVE left Co$ than are currently in it and more are leaving daily, at a more rapid pace than ever before. ABC Nightline of a few nights ago backed up aspects of this story and other aspects are covered and verified at such sites as http://www.xenu.net, http://www.forum.exscn.net/index.php? and http://whyaretheydead.net/

While the pro cult crowd and the OSA shills (such as James Lightfield and Terryeo who have, as yet, not posted here) will tell you that anyone who speaks out is confused, don't understand or are in the pay of "Big Pharma", it is actually those same people who don't understand, who are brainwashed or in the case of the shills (previously named) payed to confuse.

If it were a case of a handful of people putting down the cult of scientology then there might be some question but the fact is, all the stories of those who have left have been the same...thousands of stories, thousand of documents, dozens of court cases. The truth is the truth, Co$ is a criminal cult and nothing more and in the case of Jason, shouldn't be allowed to retain these files. The only reason they want them any more is to proceed with "Fair Game".

Excellent article, Tony. I have a question for you.

It would seem to me that Scientology is managing a great deal of personal non-public information. As such, there are data privacy laws that they would have to manage to. I guess I am wondering if there has been any effort on Jason's part to pursue his right to acquire his information through the legal system or if that is something he would consider. I would certainly think that an audit of the Scientology information system would be in order. Just a thought.
