14,000 New Yorkers Do Sun Salutations In Times Square For Summer Solstice
We don't know about you but just thinking about Times Square immediately gives us a calm and relaxing energy.
OK, so maybe not, but it was good enough for the 14,000 New Yorkers who showed up in Times Square today to participate in the 10th annual Mind Over Madness event.
The yoga-thon is in celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Yoga practitioners both novice and advanced participate in a series of classes from sunrise to sunset.
"We created this event not only to celebrate the solstice, but also to bring a sense of stillness to our crazy city," said event co-founder Tim Tompkins to the large crowd. "If you can remain calm and focused while doing yoga in the middle of Times Square then you can do it anywhere."
We showed up just in time for the afternoon bikram session, which broke a world record today by being the largest Bikram yoga class in the world. The session was taught by Rajashree Choudry, wife of Bikram Choudry who is the founder of the yoga practice. The bikram session seemed especially appropriate as today was the hottest day of the year so far -- bikram is a yoga practice that requires you to remain in a room heated to 105 degrees for 90 minutes.
Parents, friends and children all participated in the event that stretched from 42nd street to 47th in Times Square.
"This is my fourth year doing yoga in the square," said Darlene Jobson. "Both me and my kids love it. There is just something about being around all of the energy." Jobson and her friend Tiffany Martinez are long-time bikram yoga practitioners.
