170 Arrested in London Riots; Former NYPD Officers Franklin Mata and Kenneth Moreno Sentenced Today; Bat on a Plane!

• More than 170 people have been arrested in London after two nights of riots and looting. Violence began after a small anti-police demonstration took place in Tottenham, in north London, on Saturday, and then spread across London, with young people and police forces clashing. 35 police officers have been injured. • We are keeping a slightly nervous eye on Wall Street after Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. credit rating on Friday and, today, the European Central Bank began to purchase Italian and Spanish government bonds to keep those countries afloat. Prepare for *some* ups and downs today. [NPR]

• Franklin Mata and Kenneth Moreno, the two NYPD officers accused and acquitted of the rape of a woman in the East Village, will be sentenced today on their official misconduct convictions. (They've been fired from the police force, and face up to two years in jail.) [NY1]

• A 30-year-old man, Anthony Romo, drove his dad's Nissan Quest into a pond in Central Park over the weekend because, he said, his dad loved the car more than him. His dad is saying that's not true: "I love my son so much. I do everything I can to help him. It pains me now to see him." Romo was charged with reckless endangerment, trespassing, and disorderly conduct. [NYDN]
