2010 Tonys: Nominations Announced, Big on Idiot Material

The 2010 Tony nominations are out, and the yearly ceremony that becomes more and more designed to persuade people from anywhere but New York City to spend money on theater is soon to follow. The idea behind the Tonys is simply to get Broadway to appeal to the rest of America in a big, fancy show filled with Real Hollywood Stars who like theater too, you know. It's hard not to be cynical about them.

Proof? The underwhelmed critical response to Broadway's Green Day-inspired musical American Idiot, which did quite well in this year's nominations. Also, you'll see Jay-Z and Will Smith ended up with a nomination for Best Musical, which means they get two more celebrities at the Tonys. And every actor nominated for Best Actor in a Play has a prominent film career and/or some modicum of celebrity: Jude Law, Alfred Molina, Liev Schreiber, Christopher Walken, and Denzel Washington. Other celebrities who've now been forced to attend the Tonys? Scarlett Johansson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Laura Linney, Kelsey Grammer, and Sean Hayes. The Tonys didn't always used to be so celebrity-stacked. Part of the joy of the Tonys was that it didn't have celebrities, that it was a wonderful ceremony for a small community that reached out to all the people in the country who felt like they were part of that community. Chances are, things like this make them feel marginalized. Maybe not.

In any event, here're this year's nominations:
