87 Public Libraries to Reduce Hours

The Bloomberg third term proceeds apace. Today's milestone: our cash-strapped libraries will reduce hours at 87 locations. The city has cut $5.9 million from their budget (as well as 299 workers) and the state $900,000, so they're scaling back from an average 51-hour week to 45. Five libraries previously open on Sundays will be closed that day.

The full list of new hours, effective February 16, is here. All affected libraries are in Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island -- though it was announced last week that 14 Queens libraries would close on weekends in February. This is reported to be the first major cut in library hours since 2001. Oh well, there's always Barnes & Noble. Photo (cc) The Consortium.
