Alec Baldwin Is Not Replacing Keith Olbermann
Jack Donaghy is a fictional NBC executive on the show 30 Rock; Alec Baldwin is the actor who plays him. Neither is going to replace Keith Olbermann as the host of Countdown or any other show in the 8 p.m. slot on MSNBC because that would be ridiculous, despite a report from Popeater's Rob Shuter, which cites only an anonymous network source. Never trust anonymous network sources on Popeater because they just want attention for their network.
According to the dubious source:
"He's already part of the NBC family, has a huge fan base and is very respected for his long term passions for politics," a network source tells me, adding that Alec is very high, perhaps even No. 1, on the wish lists of MSNBC bigwigs. ... "He's brilliant on camera and honestly cares about news and fighting for the rights of everyday people," my source believes. "Don't count him out. There was a time when everyone said Alec would never do a sitcom, only movies. Those same people are saying he would never run for office or host a political show."
Shuter also points to Baldwin telling Eliot Spitzer, "Yes, it's something that I'm very, very interested in," about entering politics. But do not be confused! Punditry is not politics and 30 Rock is not real life. Baldwin indicated an interest in public office, not playing a blowhard on a sister network.
And just to be sure, an MSNBC flack tells The Cutline:
"Entertaining, but untrue," said Jeremy Gaines, a spokesman for the network.
