Arun Bhatia, 35 Cooper Square Developer, Continues to Violate Permits

It's been a while since we checked in on our good ol' neighbor, 35 Cooper Square. When we last spoke to the DOB, the building had been approved for demolition, yet a stop-work order was issued after improper construction began on the roof. The developer of the site, Arun Bhatia, has been issued four citations since, with listed violations including failure to safeguard property, performing work without a permit, and failure to post a permit.

According to the Local East Village, Bhatia just coughed up more than $16,000 in fines because of the violations and a failure to cover the already-damaged roof. (Which, by the way, is suffering following a week of sporadic showers. The wood is splintered and shredding, growing worse with each storm.) Those invested in saving the historic building have pleaded for a tarp to be put on at least, to no avail.

Advocates met with Bhatia last week to discuss the preservation of 35 Cooper Square and the developer's spokeswoman made sure to cite the difficulties of saving the building.

As one commenter put it on EV Grieve, "It's like when you were a kid and you wanted to do something really badly and you begged your parents and they said 'We'll see' and you knew automatically you didn't stand a chance. Goodbye, 35 Cooper Square."
