Attila the Shrub
PHILADELPHIAGeorge W. Bush may offer himself up as a "compassionate conservative," but the 81-page Republican Party platform, formally approved by the convention today, is to the right of Attila the Hun on social issues. Examples:
Abortion: Absolutely opposed to it. "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."
Gay Rights: Opposed to any legal rights to protect homosexuals. As for tolerance, Reuters reports, the party denounced those who "promote racism, anti-Semitism, ethnic prejudice, and religious intolerance," but left out criticism of those who target gays and lesbians.
Education: Support home schooling, advocate decrease in backing for sex education, and a big push for abstinence. The platform calls for a general shift to state and local control.
