AVN Adult Expo, Day One
On the first day of the Adult Video News Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), I arrived in Las Vegas in time to wait in line for two hours for a cab and miss the "trade only" day where industry members are allowed to roam the convention floor free of fans clamoring for starlets' signatures. When I got to the Venetian Hotel and Casino, I ran into Buck Angel in the lobby. He happily showed me the new promotional photo that he'd be autographing all weekend, a nude shot of his tattooed, muscled body against a red background with his tagline under his name: the man with a pussy. Not only is Buck the only female-to-male transsexual working in the mainstream porn industry (he has a contract with Robert Hill Releasing), but his film Buck's Beaver has been nominated for Best Transsexual Video. He is the sole transman nominee competing against a dozen titles featuring only transsexual women. We considered just how long it would take before transman porn might have its own category or if the gender split would at least balance out.
Gender imbalance is an unavoidable issue at porn events. While couples and women are a growing segment of the consumer fan base, they aren't the main staple at big events like AEE. The official opening night party at Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel was no exception. I'd estimate that more than a third of attendees at last year's party at the same club were women, but this year, it felt like there were ten guys to every one girl. Co-sponsor Wicked Pictures' contract stars Jessica Drake and Stormy Daniels mingled with a handful of female buyers in the VIP section, but the woman getting the most attention was downstairs on the bar facing the dance floor. Silent, poised, and very cold, she was an ice sculpture of a naked headless woman whose body served as a conduit for cocktails. One guy stood next to her, and his sole job for the evening was to pour the ingredients of a lemon drop into a tube in her neck. The bright yellow liquid then made its way through her glassy figure and came out between her legs into a waiting glass. It was sexy and weird at the same time. Silly and perverse (it was a yellow drink, after all). A fitting welcome to an equally bizarre event where sex will be on display in many forms.
Stay tuned for Day Two.
