Bangles and Baubles: Lifestyles of a Scam Artist
Hedge fund swindler Mark Bloom barely made a ripple of news yesterday when he copped to scamming his clients out of $20 million. And why would he? This is the post-Madoff world, where $50 billion stolen from trusting investors is the new threshold for working up a real outrage.
But as he stood before a judge in Manhattan federal court to plead guilty, Bloom, a former partner at the giant BDO Seidman LLP accounting firm, contributed something vitally important to our understanding of the lifestyles of today's modern multi-million-dollar financial ripoff artists: an exquisitely detailed listing of vacation properties, speedboat, lavish jewelry, pricey modern art (Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein etc.) , and a couple of grand pianos (one apiece for the Hamptons estate and Park Avenue pad).
All of it is loot accumulated by Bloom, 57, as he tripped the light fantastic with his ill-gotten gains. Now, all of it, sadly, must be handed over to Uncle Sam as restitution.
Given the size and pedigree of some of these dazzling baubles, the U.S. Attorney's office better keep careful tabs on this ice when it comes flowing in the door. This is the kind of stuff you could easily see winding up decorating the adorably sweet throat, wrist, ankle, and/or earlobes of some young thing who's been dating a handsome G-Man.
