Bernie Finally Wipes the Grin Off His Face
New York magazine, by comparing him to Heath Ledger's Joker character, captured what many had noticed about Bernie Madoff -- that in his comings and goings to court, the Ultimate Swindler continues to wear what can only be described as a slight, inscrutable grin.
There's a reason for that subtle rictus, facial expression expert Dan Hill tells us. The author of the book Emotionomics: Leveraging Emotions for Business Success, Hill claims to be able to read people from subtle signs in their faces, and he says that until now, Madoff has shown "delight" for having duped so many people. "He considered his victims beneath him," Hill tell us.
Until this morning, that is, when Madoff came to court to plead guilty and was then taken to jail to await his sentencing. Hill says he now sees in Madoff's expression a subtle raising of the right eyebrow and a shift down at the corners of his mouth, signifying sadness. "He's finally internalized what's going to happen to him. I'm surprised it took this long," says Hill.
But even if Bernie is blue, Hill says, he's still shown no fear. The face-reader says he saw the same self-confidence in Martha Stewart's mug during her trial.
We'll see if that's changed at sentencing time after Bernie's spent some time in the big house.
