Bloomberg Says Schools Have No Time to Observe Muslim Holidays
The city council is considering a non-binding resolution that asks the DOE to close schools on the Muslim holy days Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Mayor Bloomberg says there's no time for that. He said the same thing when it came up last year, arguing that "we need more children in school... more, not less." This time the sentiment (but no quote) is attributed to him that New York's schools are too diverse to acknowledge more religious holidays than it does. It's estimated that about 12 percent of city schoolkids practice the Muslim faith. Of course, after mayoral control expires at midnight Bloomberg won't have anything to say about it. Then comes the rule of the Judges!
