Breaking: Public Servants Give Away Your Money
The Post was all over Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this morning for authorizing the suspension of taxes on foreign diplomats' residences in New York, which they estimated as a $260 million loss for the city. Though other countries reciprocate this tax favor with our diplomats, the story got Mayor Bloomberg mad. " if you or I have a building [in the city], we pay taxes," says the Mayor. "It is totally unfair." The Post's tabloid competitor the Daily News reports that the Mayor last Friday authorized raises for City Hall employees totalling $69 million, and got Bill Thompson to complain about that. Nearly lost in these skirmishes are the raises doled out to state senate workers while that chamber was in Albany Coup chaos, but these amount to measly hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars, and the burden will be shared with citizens of other jurisdictions as well.
