Brooklyn's Hipster Ferry to Happen in 2011
A rendering, via Brooklyn365
Hold onto your fedoras, people! A proposed Williamsburg-Northside-Greenpoint ferry is in the works for a spring 2011 launch, according to the New York City Economic Development Group. Plans are still in the early stages according to the woman we spoke to, meaning we don't yet know if they'll serve PBR or even how many boats, what sort of schedule, or how much a ride will cost. But we do have hopes this will take some pressure off the oh-so-hard-working L train, and maybe even resolve those weekend trapped-in-Greenpoint-without-the-G issues.
Brooklyn365 reports that RFP submissions for the North Williamsburg Ferry Landing are due by August 18. We'll update as we hear more!
According to the New York Post, officials are also considering adding ferry service to La Guardia Airport and Astoria, and to 125th, 20th, 75th and 90th streets along the East River in Manhattan, as well as looking at the possibility of ferry service to Roosevelt Island and Coney Island.
We can think of worse things than commuting by water. Get your boat shoes ready.
