California Budget: Another Reason to Love New York
Hasta la vista, assholes.
The California legislature has just passed a budget that uses "spending cuts, tax increases and borrowing" to help close a $42 billion dollar deficit. Why do we bring you this exotic news from the other side of the country? To make you feel better about New York's $1.6 billion deficit.
Also, to remind you that as clumsily as our governance sometimes goes, we still aren't plagued by a culture of tax-cutting monomaniacs whose ignorant self-interest has distorted Cali budgets for decades, or of movie star governors who don't know what the fuck they're doing.
Our local graft and corruption at least spreads some wealth around; for example, if our schools are a mess, we cheerfully "throw money at the problem," while in California they tend to starve their schools until things get crucial, then in a panic raise special taxes to fix them, further destabilizing the economy.
Now the Sunshine State's in deep shit, and we're just squabbling over how to split up the nice pie Uncle Barack is going to send us. So what if our rap and basketball teams suck? East coast rules! Photo (cc) azrainman.
