Candidates Removed, Endorsed in 3 Council Races

The field competing for Michael McMahon's old city council seat, which he left to go to Congress, has grown smaller. Petition challenges have knocked off Thomas Curitore, Anthony Cosentino, and Rajiv Gowda, reports the Staten Island Advance. The board of elections will rule on John Tabacco's petitions next week, so at this writing only Ken Mitchell, Debi Rose (pictured), the Rev. Tony Baker, Paul Sariyan and Donald Pagano are definitely in the running. Mitchell has been endorsed by McMahon, but Rose just got a couple of key endorsements: the powerful 1199 SEIU union and the Working Families Party, which has a valuable ballot line.

In a separate special election race for state senator Joseph Addabbo's old seat, a few candidates were also recently knocked off, leaving Lew Simon, Geraldine Chapey, Mike Ricatto and Eric Ulrich to fight it out. In a race for state senator Hiram Monserrate's seat, Julissa Ferreras (Monserrate's former chief of staff, as well as a 1199/WFP endorsee), Angel Del Villar, George Dixon, Jose Eduardo Giraldo and Francisco Moya contend. The elections are set for February 24.
