Charlotte Bloomberg, Mayor's Mom, Dead at 102
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's mother died on Sunday in Massachusetts at the age of 102. "Today, my sister, Marjorie, and I lost our mother, Charlotte, after an extraordinary 102 years of life," the mayor wrote in a statement. "As the center of our family, our mother's unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence, and constant love were gifts that profoundly shaped our lives and the lives of so many who knew her." Charlotte Bloomberg (née Rubens) was born in Jersey City, educated at NYU, and in 1934 married William H. Bloomberg, with whom she had two children. The three-time mayor of New York City took his oath of office on her Bible and was said to have called her "nearly every day." [NYT]
