City Council Approves Willets Point Plan
The City Council's Land Use Committee approved the Willets Point Development Plan this morning, 19-2, and late this afternoon the full Council passed it 42-2, with one abstention. The city now has to reach an accommodation with local land owners who have not already sold out, or exercise its right of eminent domain on them. Joe Joseph Ardizzone, longtime resident and oft-publicized "mayor" of Willets Point, expressed his displeasure to NY1: "Economic development, has thousands of acres of city-owned property that they can turn around and develop... Why are they taking private property? That’s against democracy of the United States.”
