City Offers 50% Tax Refund Match to Poor Folks
If you earn less than $20,000 a year, or are part of a family earning less than $45,000 a year, congratulations -- first, because you're somehow able to survive in New York on that, and second, because you're eligible for a $aveNYC account. Mayor Bloomberg offers you a place to put your tax refund, where it will draw interest at "2 to 3 percent" and be supplemented (up to $250) by 50 percent matching funds. You can also get free or low-cost tax prep. Here's a list of locations where you can apply. So if you can afford to put that tax refund away instead of spending it on food or clothing, get up from that library computer, find a pay phone, and see to it!
