Cynthia Lopez Murder: Daniel Elias Allegedly Claims Self-Defense — 'She Tried to Stab Me. I Choked Her. Is She OK?'
If the relationship between Sunset Park couple Cynthia Lopez, 29, and Daniel Elias, 28, was as stormy as reported, its ending (her body was discovered shortly before 6 a.m. Monday, April 11) was all too predictable. But Elias got in the last word, accusing her of trying to stab him and then choking her to death in self-defense, according to info gathered by the Wall Street Journal.
Will Elias stick to that story? His family sure is.
"He's a great man and a great dad," Elias's mom, Elizabeth Morales, told the Daily News, which adds that his family claims that he killed her by accident.
Their daughter, Destiny, 7, was in another room when Lopez was slain, cops say via the Post. None of the four other people in the apartment at 561 50th Street in Brooklyn say they saw or heard anything.
But as the Post says:
A relative of Elias said there may have been a fight over the boyfriend's accusations that Lopez was cheating on him.
The relative said the pair had a stormy, off-and-on relationship.
The Daily News reports that Elias left the crime scene for a short time before returning and being arrested:
During his brief absence from the crime scene, Elias went to his aunt's home just four blocks away. He told the aunt, Marisol Lopez - no relation to the victim - that his girlfriend had been cheating. Then they started arguing.
"He said she charged at him with a knife and he choked her," the 44-year-old aunt recalled Elias saying.
"I gotta go," he told her. "I know I'm going to jail. I love you."
Then he ran out the door.
