Dear Tony Perkins: You Are a Terrible, Ignorant Human Who Will Hopefully Die Loveless and Alone
Dear Tony Perkins:
Hopefully our readers don't know who you are until now, but just to be clear, you are the former Louisiana congressman who is now the president of an uber-right evangelical Christian organization called the Family Research Council, where you pose as a responsible moral authority on Basically Everything, no? And given the recent rash of gay bullying (and consequent teen suicides as a result), it would seem your voice is being heard louder than ever. Like today, in this NPR report, where you say:
"There's no correlation between inacceptance of homosexuality and depression and suicide."
Rather, Perkins says, there is another factor that leads kids to kill themselves. "These young people who identify as gay or lesbian, we know from the social science that they have a higher propensity to depression or suicide because of that internal conflict," he says. Homosexuality is "abnormal," he says, and kids know it, which leads them to despair. That's why he wants to confront gay activism in public schools. For example, his group supports the Day of Truth, when Christian high schoolers make their case that homosexuality is a sin.
So, let's get this straight:
- Kids are killing themselves, right?
- But kids are not killing themselves because their lives on this planet are hell, but because they're convinced they're going to hell and that they are bad people, correct?
- And this is as opposed to the kids torturing them on a daily basis, whose destination other than their tragic permanence on this planet has yet to be seen, right?

Okay. Fair. We'll actually concede that you're correct. That you're right. We'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and admit that you've got this thing nailed down.
On one condition.
Talk to the parents of the following people:
Seeing as how they have invaluable experience with the matter of teenagers killing themselves because they've been bullied as gay kids, all we would need is for them to agree with you that their children killed themselves because there was too much support and/or gay activism corrupting their minds. That's it. Do that, and we'll hand this thing right over to you.
But you won't, because you're the kind of ignorant, sentient being intelligent enough to come into a position of power and also intelligent enough to do what it takes to preserve it -- by catering to the most contagious lowest common denominator there is: hate -- who lacks the compassion to see beyond your short-sighted outlook on the distance between right and wrong to a fundamental human rights crime you are only making worse. If you think these kids are going to hell, let them. It's their right! But to reinforce the suffering of those like them that are still around by continuing to disseminate information on just what terrible people they are makes you something just short of a war criminal without the war.
Hopefully you will die alone and miserable. Not because any good will come of it either, or it will serve as any proper form of retribution. Mostly, just because you make me angry. You make things worse. You undoubtedly deserve worse than that, but it's the most benevolent recourse at hand without letting you evoke any more hatred or anger or sadness than you already have.
