Department of Investigation Announces Two Schoolyard Sexual Assault Cases in One Day
Yesterday, the Department of Investigation announced the findings of two sexual assault investigations that occurred in New York City schools. Tyshaunna Roberts, 22, a dance teacher at an after-school program in Queens, has been charged for carrying on a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old female student.
In the Bronx, Angelyn Donald, principal at P.S. 386, was recommended for termination after the Special Commissioner of Investigation's office discovered she failed to report the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old student at the hands of 40-year-old teacher Anthony Criscuolo.
The Department of Investigation's office began examining Donald's failure to report soon after Criscuolo's arrest in June, says SCI spokesperson Regina Romain.
According to the investigation, several students approached Donald beginning in May, alleging that Criscuolo had been passing sexually explicit notes to the 10-year-old. Several of the students also claimed Criscuolo was kissing the student in the middle of class and when other children were out of the classroom.
Criscuolo was arrested June 19 after the student's mother went to the police. He is currently awaiting trial on $2 million bail.
Investigators recommended to the Department of Education that Donald be fired and be prevented from holding a position in New York schools in the future, according to the report sent to Chancellor Dennis Walcott.
The report was also forwarded to the Bronx District Attorney, according to the Special Commissioner's Office. No charges have been filed at press time.
In a separate investigation, the SCI found that Tyshaunna Roberts, a dance teacher at the Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation in Queens, sexually assaulted a 13-year-old in the course of teaching an after-school program at Pathways College Preparatory School.
The SCI opened an investigation on Roberts on October 15 after the student's mother went to the police with inappropriate Facebook messages Roberts was sending the child.
According to the Daily News, Roberts "placed her hands inside the vagina of victim" and "placed her mouth" on the student's genitals.
Roberts was fired once the complaint was filed. She was arrested on Wednesday. Bail is set at $75,000.
