Detectives Like it Hot: DA Fundraiser Bash at Troubled Chelsea Club

The Detectives' Endowment Association and a bevy of other local police unions backing ex-judge Leslie Crocker Snyder for Manhattan D.A. are throwing a $50-head fundraiser for her candidacy tomorrow night, and they've picked a place well-known for all the wrong reasons to cops and police brass: Chelsea's ultra-hot Marquee on Tenth Avenue and 27th St.

The night spot paid a $100,000 fine last fall to the State Liquor Authority after undercover cops bought cocaine there eight separate times. Night club owners cooperated but detectives were back inside the club in December after the disappearance of a 25 year-old Brooklyn woman, Laura Garza, who was last seen leaving the club with a registered sex offender.

Asked if this was the best place to promote a District Attorney candidacy, Snyder campaign spokesman Michael Tobman said: "We have been aware of the incidents and we believe they do not reflect on Leslie's accomplishments or qualifications."

Should hope not! But Snyder's not the only D.A. candidate with a wierd sense of place: Tonight, Cyrus Vance, Jr. -- who is claiming the mantle of retiring legend Robert Morgenthau -- is holding his own kick-off party at Fresco by Scotto -- where family patriarch and one-time Gambino crime family captain Anthony Scotto regularly greets customers. Maybe everyone's in training for the big cases they hope to soon be tackling.

No fundraising bash blues for the third candidate in the race, but veteran gun control advocate Richard Aborn today picked up what his campaign says is the first political endorsement of the race -- West Side state assemblyman Danny O'Donnell. O'Donnell, who is gay, is an ex-public defender who said he is backing Aborn because of his record in "taking on the NRA on guns, investingating police misconduct."
