Diaz "Sanctified" Now-Dead Senate Deal with Prayer
Apparently the "handshake deal" between Malcolm Smith and the three Democratic state senate dissidents -- which is now in collapse -- also involved Jesus. Gang leader Carl Kruger tells the Albany Times Union that the agreement "was sanctified by a prayer with Senator Diaz," the anti-gay bigot of the gang, "which is better than a notary."
Yet somehow the divinely-ordained deal collapsed. Smith characterizes the fall as owing to the intransigence of the gangsters, particularly on gay marriage, which the party leadership finally found intolerable. Pedro Espada, who lost his majority leader promise, says he and his gang were dismayed to learn "we had shaken hands with a liar and a scoundrel" (Smith) and that he was talking to the Republicans now.
