Diaz Splits, and Now It's a "Gang of 2" in State Senate (Updated)
The Examiner says that State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. has pledged his support to Malcolm Smith as Majority Leader*. Following the defection of Hiram Monserrate, this would leave Carl Kruger and the obstreperous Pedro Espada as the lone holdouts among the four Democratic Senators who've been bucking the Party's agenda. No word yet if Smith cut a deal on gay marriage, opposition to a Senate vote on which was said to be Diaz' price. Reached in San Juan, Espada told the Daily News' Liz Benjamin, "I still maintain that there is a Democratic leader [Carl Kruger and I] can both vote for, but Malcolm Smith is not that leader."
