FBI Arrests Jersey Mayors, Rabbis in Corruption Bust
The FBI swooped in this morning and arrested a bunch of New Jersey politicians -- and rabbis! -- in an international money laundering and corruption investigation. Among the former class of detainee: Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano (pictured), Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega Jr., and State Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt.
It's also reported that rabbis were hauled in, and that their involvement has to do with doings at the Deal Yeshiva, a Sephardic institution in Ocean Township and West Long Branch.
A site called "Peter Cammarano for Hoboken" says, "Almost no person I know is even remotely surprised. He is a politician in Hudson County, New Jersey" and "Can you even imagine all the "no show" jobs that are going to have to be vacated and replaced by somebody elses brother in law? What a shame."
Some detect in the celebrity arrests the hand of Chris Christie, a former, highly litigious U.S. attorney who running for Governor of New Jersey. Apparently the current U.S. attorney hasn't told the Hudson County prosecutor anything about it.
Mayor Cammarano turned 32 last night and, apparently unaware that the hammer was about to fall, partied at the opening night of Hoboken's St. Ann's Festival, even manning the bar at one point.
