Former Top Chef Contestant Beaten in Gay-Bias Attack
A lawyer for Josie Smith-Malave— a former contestant on Bravo's Top Chef and a New York Sharks woman's football team player—is calling for a hate-crime investigation into a Labor Day weekend assault of Smith-Malave and two other women outside a bar in Long Island.
Smith-Malave, her sister, and a friend were enjoying a quiet drink at Partners bar in Sea Cliff when things turned ugly after the women started dancing together, said attorney Yetta Kurland. After the women were asked to leave the bar, a group of young people followed them out spitting on them, yelling anti-gay epithets, and eventually assaulting the women, Kurland said.
Kurland demanded today that the Nassau County police open a hate-crime probe. Nassau police said the incident was under investigation.
