Gandhi Statue's Glasses Stolen in Union Square
"It's like defaming a bible," someone said to DNAinfo about the missing glasses on the bronze Gandhi statue in Union Square Park. "If we would have seen that, we would have taken care of it," assured the vendor. Reported missing last week, the classic round glasses will be replaced in just a few days, so tourists should rest easy. The 25-year-old statue has been known to misplace its frames "once in while," according to the Parks Department, though many park regulars had a hard time remembering if the immortalized Gandhi had glasses on at all. He did, photographic evidence informed everyone, and if there was any doubt, the latest thief left the earpieces in place and only took the fronts. "Poor Gandhi, frozen in time and unable to see," said one particularly sympathetic bystander. Nearby NYU fraternities are probably to blame, somehow. [DNAinfo]
