Gioia Wants Queens Costco to Accept Food Stamps
There's a Costco in Long Island City and, despite the neighborhood's carefully cultivated up-and-coming image, a lot of poor people live there and in surronding areas, so councilmember Eric Gioia is demanding that the megastore start accepting food stamps. Such a program "would have an immediate positive impact on their quality of life by making healthy food available at bulk prices," says Gioia's office. The New York City Hunger Blog says Costco president James Sinegal told the councilmember they are "considering" the proposal.
