Gitmo Detainees Re-Assigned to Yemen, Ireland
Slowly fulfilling its promise to close the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison this year, the Obama Administration has been emptying out the place, one former terror suspect at a time. On Saturday, three detainees were shipped to Yemen and Ireland.
Alla Ali Bin Ali Ahmed, a native of Yemen was transferred to the government of Yemen. On May 4, a federal court ruled that Ahmed may no longer be detained under the Authorization for the Use of Military Force and ordered the government to release him from Gitmo.
In addition, two additional detainees were transferred to the government of Ireland. Per a request from the government of Ireland, the identities of these detainees were withheld for security and privacy reasons...
We all know that when the government sends out press releases on a Saturday it's because they're hoping fewer journalists will take notice. And perhaps we got this one on Saturday because the last time a group of detainees were released it caused a mini-international controversy, with the Brits upset that the Obama Administration didn't tell them they'd be sending four detainees to the island of Bermuda, a colony.
Here are some of the other countries that have accepted more than 550 Gitmo detainees since 2002: Albania, Algeria, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Bermuda, Chad, Denmark, Egypt, France, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom and Yemen.
