GOP Assemblyman Calls for Constitutional Convention, Gets Democratic Backer (Update: Dem Backer Calls Espada a Thug)

The polls show support for a New York State Constitutional convention, and now the idea has a champion: Republican assemblyman and minority leader Brian Kolb. Back in August he called for a "people's constitutional convention," a "non-partisan event, representative of the diverse demography and geography of our state" the goal of which would be to end "years of government dysfunction, bitter partisanship and egregious waste of taxpayer dollars for which Albany has become known." Kolb's proposal has a Facebook page, an online petition from the New York Republican Assembly Campaign Committee, press coverage, enthusiastic letters to the editor, and now a Democratic supporter in the chamber, assemblyman Mark Schroeder. Kolb is best known for demanding CBS fire David Letterman for making mean jokes about Sarah Palin, but this is a quixotic campaign that may be more successful. Or it could end in tears. We doubt Pedro Espada will much support any attempt in the senate to stem the corruption that brought him to power. Still, worth a shot, no? (We're speaking figuratively.)

Update: Schroeder called Espada a thug! Oh, this thing is so on.
