GOP-Friendly Dem Senators Muscle Their Albany Colleagues
The Times points out that among the Democrats' new State Senate majority are four Senators who may not support Malcolm Smith for Senate majority leader. These include Runnin' Scared subjects Pedro Espada, who in his previous Senate tenure caucused with the GOP, and Ruben Diaz Sr, who has threatened to defect to them. The prospect of the current Republican leader, Dean Skelos, being returned to power as a result seems far-fetched, but could be a good bargaining position for the deeply self-interested rebels.
Politics on the Hudson reports that Diaz and Espada, and their colleagues Hiram Monserrate and Carl Kruger, will not attend the Democratic Senate conference today; Diaz told PotH, oddly, that "you can’t do anything with the people that lost."
