Hawaiian Tropic Zone Closing for "Renovations"
It's been hit with rape, sexual harrassment, and discrimination charges, but management of the Hawaiian Tropic Zone tells the Daily News those have nothing to do with the planned temporary closing of the midtown bikini bar and restaurant on Saturday. "We're going to use the opportunity to spruce the place up a little bit," said senior VP Jamie Galler. When they're back, allegedly in May, they'll be be cut from two stories to one.
We have frequently observed, through its giant windows and most days of the week, surprisingly light lunch traffic in the Zone, which presumably expected large tourist and business trade (though some firms have blocked their staff from expensing HTZ receipts), and more special events like Michael Strahan's Super Bowl Ring Ceremony, from which this picture was taken.
Yesterday The Feedbag's Gastrodamus predicted that "the end is near" for what Newyorkology calls the "Hooters-style" bar and restaurant and the Zone's MySpace page calls "an exotic journey separating [diners] from the concrete jungle."
