Here Comes the East Side Waterfront Project

Here Comes the East Side Waterfront Project

After some delays, Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Paterson and Assembly Speaker Silver broke ground today on the next big thing in civic beautification: the East River Waterfront Esplanade and Piers Project. Phase one costs $148 million; the whole thing is supposed to be finished by late 2011. It will run from the Battery Maritime Building to Pier 35, and feature pavilions -- we really don't have many of those, and our best-known one is falling apart -- which are supposed to "create concentrated areas for recreation where it is most appropriate," and "get-downs," steps in the bulkhead line that lead pedestrians to the water. Also a greenway, bike lane, etc. Oh, and jobs! 400 of them are promised as a result.
